| "Mom my throat's sore" |
Why is it that we cringe when we hear certain words come from our children's mouth? Oh, were sorry, you thought we were referring to THOSE words. No, not this time. We are talking about the other words. When a mom hears, "my throat is sore", a moms mind might immediately do one or all of the following: play out the scenario of the entire house coming down with yet, another cold with days of misery to follow; or why don't people keep their kids home from school and church when they are sick, or okay, stop what I am doing, or about to do, time to make some hot tea, get a soft blanket, a book a homemade sore throat lollipop and care for my child.
Today we are talking about a common cold or allergy sore throat.
Before we move on please note:
HONEY SHOULD "NOT" BE GIVEN TO CHILDREN 12 MONTHS OR YOUNGER. CONSULT YOUR PEDIATRICIAN FOR ADVISE. THE RISK IS HIGH FOR INFANT BOTULISM.
Kids Honey Lemon Sore Throat Lollipops Recipe
Honey: we used 1 cup but use as much or as little as you like.
Essential Lemon Oil: 3-4 drops if you are comfortable with that
or pure organic lemon extract 1 teaspoon
Lollipop sticks
Candy thermometer
nonstick cookie mat or hard candy mold
How many lollipops you get will depend on what size you make them.
Have ready ahead of time your nonstick pad and lollipop sticks so that when the mixture is ready to work with, everything else is too.
Using a medium sized pot, place on the stove, add hone, lemon oil and candy thermometer. You want the honey to reach 300 degrees. Once mixture is to temperature take off the heat and work carefully and quickly to spoon out about a teaspoon size bit of honey onto the mat and then place your lollipop stick into the blob. Let honey cool completely before removing.
For more information on safely taking essential oil internally, please go here.
This is what the mixture looks like spoon'd onto the nonstick pad and lollipop sticks placed.
Sine we did not use a mold, sometimes the mixture moved more than others. We like the fact that when that does happen it is all the more homemade looking and perfectly fine.
We had some left over and thought we would pour it into some nonstick heart molds and than use the hearts in a pot of hot tea to flavor it during cold season or any time really.
We wrapped the lollipops in wax paper to keep them sanitary and so not to stick to one another.
The amber colored honey is so pretty.
Wrapped honey tea pot sore throat hearts.
"Blue, blue you have the flu. I have something to help you"
Keep these lollipops in a cool dry place.
You may want to make up a batch to have on hand, so when you hear those dirty little words, "mom my throat is sore", you can jump into action! Be inspired. Get creative!
Whoever causes the upright to go astray in an evil way,
He himself will fall into his own pit;
But the blameless will inherit good.
He himself will fall into his own pit;
But the blameless will inherit good.

ReplyDeleteI just made a batch tonight and they came out really good.... Just wondering if they are supposed to be softer than typical cough drops or if I did something wrong.... They are also very sticky so I lightly dusted them with powdered sugar as suggested in another recipe for cough drops!!
ReplyDeleteThis was our first time making these and we did find them to be less hard as the traditional drops and somewhat sticky. Otherwise, they tasted great!
DeleteI like this concept. I visited your blog for the first time and just been your fan. Keep posting as I am gonna come to read it everyday.
